More than half of our body's weight- 60% of it- is water! This seemingly simple liquid is vital for each and every one of us to live and function. In fact, every system in our body requires water. Water carries out many duties to keep us in tip top shape:
Water helps out our kidneys and liver by detoxifying to flush out waste that our bodies cannot use. Because it can dissolve nearly anything, water helps our digestion by breaking down food into basic nutrients and then delivering the nutrients to individual cells. Water carries oxygen to our cells as well. Since it makes up the majority of our bodies, water acts as an insulator, regulating our internal temperature and providing cushion and lubrication for our joints. Finally, it keeps our skin and sensitive tissues like our eyes and nose moist.
Simply put, life as we know it cannot exist without water. It allows individual cells to work together to form a massive network that is our body. For this reason, we must always make sure to stay hydrated by drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day. Like a car low on oil, when we start getting dehydrated, our body begins to falter; headaches, dry skin, fatigue, and thirst are all symptoms of dehydration. Since health is key to beauty, be sure to stay hydrated, but remember that water is a precious resource and should never be wasted.
